Distribution: N - VG (TSB 17933), Frl, Ven (TSB 17934), TAA (Škaloud & Peksa 2008, Nascimbene & al. 2007b, Nimis & al. 2015), Lomb.
Description: Thallus crustose, very thin, white to pale grey, mostly endosubstratic. Apothecia 0.12-0.3 mm wide, immersed in thalline warts (1-5 apothecia per wart), with a pale orange-brown disc. Proper exciple poorly developed, consisting of a thin layer of periclinally arranged hyphae; hymenium colourless, c. 80 μm tall, I-; paraphysoids c. 1.5 μm thick, branched and anastomosed, not swollen at apex; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, subcylindrical, unitunicate, the apex not thickened, I-, surrounded by an amyloid ring and surmounted by a thin amyloid cap. Ascospores 1-septate, ellipsoid to narrowly ellipsoid, hyaline, thin-walled, (11-)13-16(-18.5) x (4.5-)6-7.5 μm. Pycnidia 90-160 μm wide, slightly prominent. Conidia short-bacilliform, 3.5-4.5 x c. 0.7 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ weakly yellow, C+ red, P-. Chemistry: gyrophoric acid (major) lecanoric acid (traces).
Note: on acidic substrata such as bark, especially of conifers, wood, plant debris, muribund bryophytes, in the understory of upper montane moist forest, and among shrubs in the subalpine belt of the Alps. The var. tetraspora Scheid., known from neighbouring countries, should be looked for in the Italian Alps.
