in Elvebakk & Hertel, Norsk Polarinst. Skr., 198: 1996. Basionym: Lecidea atromarginata H. Magn. Meddel. Göteb. Bot. Trädg. - 6: 95, 1931 (“1930”).
Synonyms:
Distribution: N - Ven (Hertel & Schuhwerk 2010), TAA (Hertel & Schuhwerk 2010).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, continuous to rimose, whitish, cream-coloured or pale lemon yellow, forming small, but sometimes coalescing patches to 1 cm in diam, often delimited by a thin, white or black prothallus. Apothecia lecideine (rarely appearing lecanorine when very young), at first half-immersed, then subsessile, rounded to slightly irregular in outline, 0.4-0.6 mm across, with a black, epruinose, flat to convex, and a black, soon excluded proper margin; thalline margin present only in very young apothecia, very soon excluded. Proper exciple brownish green in outer part, colourless within; epithecium yellow-green to green-black; hymenium colourless 35-75 µm high; paraphyses 1.5-2.5 µm thick in lower part, the apical cells 3.5-5-5(-6) µm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, very thin-walled, with a K/I+ blue, tall tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, (8-)10-12(-14) x (4-)5-6(-7.5) µm. Pycnidia frequent, black. Conidia curved, 11-15 x 0.5-1 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecial margin K- or K+ yellow, C-, KC+ yellowish, P- or P+ weakly orange, UV-. Chemistry: usnic acid, stictic acid complex.
Note: a holarctic species found on calciferous sandstone and basalt, with optimum above treeline, up to the nival belt; closely related to L. marginata, differing mainly in chemistry (usnic and stictic acids).
