Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic, poorly evident, smooth, whitish, without a distinct prothallus. Apothecia arthonioid, immarginate, black, epruinose, flat to weakly convex, elongated, simple or branched, immersed to semi-sessile, 0.3-1 x 0.1-0.2 mm. Proper exciple poorly developed, dark olivaceous brown, c. 10 µm wide; epithecium dark olivaceous brown to blackish green, K-; hymenium colourless, 30-40 µm high, the hymenial gel I+ and K/I+ blue; paraphysoids richly branched, c. 1 µm thick, the apical cells 2-2.5 µm wide, with a distinct pigmented cap; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, broadly ovoid, semi-fissitunicate, with a large apical dome and a distinct ocular chamber, chamber, the apex with a K/I+ blue ring-structure, Arthonia-type. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, often slightly constricted at septum, with an epispore, 9-15 x 3-5 µm. Pycnidia black, immersed, the wall olivaceous brown. Conidia bacilliform, straight, 3-5 x 0.5-1 µm. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a holarctic species found on smooth, nutrient-rich bark, e.g. of Fraxinus.
