Description: Thallus crustose, epilithic, areolate, often forming extensive patches to 10 cm diam., the areoles 0.3-1.5(-3) mm wide, mostly contiguous, irregular in outline, usually flat and uneven, pale to dark reddish or brown, often with black margins and undersides, epruinose. Algal layer continuous. Apothecia 1-5 per areole, 0.2-1 mm acrosss, at first punctiform, later expanded, with a concave to flat, usually angular or irregular, immersed, reddish brown to blackish disc, and an inapparent thalline margin. Proper exciple distinct, 10-30 μm thick; epithecium brownish; hymenium colourless, 70-120 μm tall; paraphyses conglutinate, 1.5-2 μm thick at base, 2-4 μm at apex; hypothecium colourless. Asci 100-200-spored, clavate, the apical dome K/I-. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid to subcylindrical, 4-7 x 1-2 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-, UV-. Chemistry: gyrophoric acid.
Note: a holarctic species of acid siliceous rocks wetted by rain, sometimes growing on other lichens, with a wide altitudinal range. Several records, especially those from southern Italy, need confirmation, but the species is certainly widespread throughout the country.
