Description: Thallus crustose, pale grey to whitish, thin, continuous, often inconspicuous and poorly evident. Apothecia frequent, zeorine-biatorine, sessile, slightly constricted at base, 0.2-0.5(-1) mm across, the disc slightly concave to slightly convex, lemon-yellow, becoming greenish yellow to dark green, sometimes almost black in forms without anthraquinones, the proper margin thin, smooth, often paler than disc; a grey thalline margin is sometimes visible on the underside of the apothecia. Exciple of radiating hyphae, orange brown in outer part, colourless within; epithecium coarsely granular, K+ red, or K- in forms devoid of anthraquinones; hymenium and hypothecium colourless; paraphyses c. 1.5 μm thick at base, the apical cells swollen, c. 4 μm wide. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, (11-)14-17(-18) x (6-)7-9(-10.5) μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 3-6 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; apothecia K+ red or K- in the forms devoid of anthraquinones. Chemistry: apothecia usually with anthraquinones (parietin, fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin, and parietinic acid), sometimes without anthraquinones in black-fruited forms; blackened parts with the Cinereorufa-green pigment. Note: a holarctic, arctic-alpine species, mainly found on mosses and plant debris, often on leaves of Saxifraga, in Carex firma-stands over calcareous substrata; common in the Alps, rare in the Central Apennines.
