Ann. Bot. Fenn., 22: 291, 1985.
Synonyms: Peltigera occidentalis sensu Kristinsson
Distribution: N - Lomb (Vitikainen 1994, in Switzerland, near the border), Piem (Matteucci & al. 2015b), VA (Vitikainen 1994, in France, near the border). C - Marc (Nimis & Tretiach 1999).
Description: Thallus foliose, heteromerous and dorsiventral, broad-lobed, grey-brown to brown, often with a yellowish hue when dry, blackish green when wet, loosely attached, forming up to 10 cm wide rosettes. Lobes elongated, flattened, contiguous, with rounded ends, 1-1.5 cm wide, 5-7 cm long, with an erect tomentum in marginal parts, glabrescent in central parts, smooth or mostly somewhat scabrous, with up-turned margins. Lower surface with dark, flat veins coated with a dark tomentum; interstices between veins white and lenticular; rhizines fasciculate, tufted or slightly confluent, 3-4 mm long, dark brown to black, squarrosely branched. Upper cortex pseudoparenchymatous; medulla white; lower cortex absent. Apothecia frequent, terminal on ascending lobes, saddle-shaped, 8-10 mm across, with a brown disc. Paraphyses simple, distinctly thickened above. Asci 8-spored, fissitunicate, the thickened apex with a K/I+ blue ring, Peltigera-type. Ascospores 3-5-septate, hyaline to pale brown at maturity, acicular, thin-walled, (40-)44-59(-73) x 3-4(-5) μm. Photobiont cyanobacterial (Nostoc, the cells not in long chains). Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a slightly calciphilous species, probably more widespread, both in the Alps and the Apennines, with optimum near treeline.
Growth form: Foliose, broad lobed
Substrata: soil, terricolous mosses, and plant debris
Photobiont: cyanobacteria, filamentous (e.g. Nostoc, Scytonema)
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
