Peltigera lepidophora (Vain.) Bitter

Synonyms: Peltigera lepidophora f. helvetica Gyeln.; Peltigera lepidophora f. nudiuscula Gyeln.?; Peltigera lepidophora var. dalecarlica Gyeln.
Distribution: N - Frl, Ven (Nimis 1994, Nascimbene & Marini 2007), TAA (Nascimbene & al. 2006, 2022, Bilovitz & al. 2014b), Lomb (Vitikainen 1994, Gheza 2019, Gheza & al. 2022), Piem (Clerc & al. 1999), VA (Vitikainen 1994). C - Laz (Brackel 2015), Abr (Gheza & al. 2021). S - Si (Di Martino & Stancanelli 2015).
Description: Thallus foliose, broad-lobed, heteromerous, dorsiventral, grey brown to brown often with a yellowish hue when dry, blackish when wet, loosely attached. Lobes concave to flat, adpressed to the substratum, rounded, 5-10(-20) mm broad, to 35(-40) mm long, glabrous to sparsely tomentose at margin, somewhat scabrous, with darker, flattened, peltate, up to 1.5 mm broad schizidia resembling the cephalodia of P. aphthosa. Lower surface whitish to pale brown, with rather indistinct, pale brown, narrow and flat veins and simple to fibrillose, brown, up to 5(-10) mm long rhizines. Upper cortex pseudoparenchymatous; medulla white; lower cortex absent. Apothecia rare, on short erect lobes, small, saddle-shaped, brown. Paraphyses simple, distinctly thickened above. Asci 8-spored, fissitunicate, the thickened apex with a K/I+ blue ring, Peltigera-type. Ascospores 3-7-septate, hyaline to pale brown at maturity, fusiform, 49-59 x 4.5-5 µm. Photobiont cyanobacterial (Nostoc, the cells not in long chains). Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a mainly boreal-montane, circumpolar pioneer species of base-rich mineral soil, most frequent in upland areas with optimum near treeline; most frequent in the Alps, but apparently reaching the mountains of Sicily.
