Ergebn. Wiss. Unters. Schweiz. Nationalparks, n.F. 3, 27: 484, 1952.
Synonyms:
Distribution: N - Piem (TSB 33303).
Description: Thallus foliose, heteromerous, dorsiventral, narrow-lobed, closely adpressed, forming orbicular to irregular, up to 5(-10) cm wide rosettes. Lobes 0.8-1.5(-3) mm wide, flattened, radiating, usually overlapping, whitish to bluish grey, white-maculate, with a few marginal to apparently laminal, at first convex, then often flattened to concave, blue-grey soralia. Lower surface largely yellow-orange, with dark, mostly simple rhizines. Upper cortex paraplectenchymatous; medulla yellow at least in lower part; lower cortex prosoplectenchymatous with the lowermost part gradually forming rounded, isodiametric cells. Apothecia rare, lecanorine, to 1.5 mm across, with a brown-black, sometimes pruinose disc and an entire to crenulated thalline margin. Asci 8-spored, clavate, very thin-walled, with a K/I+ blue, tall tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-septate, brown, ellipsoid, 17-25 x 6-11 µm, the wall thickened at apex and at septum, Physcia-type. Pycnidia: black, immersed. Conidia subcylindrical, 4-6 x 1 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P+ yellow; medulla and lower surface K+ red. Chemistry: cortex with atranorin; medulla with atranorin, zeorin, and skyrin.
Note: a morph with orange medulla, most frequent in continental Alpine areas, which is worthy of further study.
Growth form: Foliose, narrow lobed
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by soredia, or soredia-like structures (e.g. blastidia)
Poorly known taxon in need of further study
