Description: Thallus crustose, inconspicuous or slightly bleaching the bark, non-lichenized. Perithecia black, circular or ellipsoid in outline, (0.2-)0.3-0.45 x 0.2-0.3(-0.4) mm, when young often covered by a thin layer of bark cells which gives them a whitish-pruinose appearance. Involucrellum dimidiate, brown in water, K + greenish, clypeate, of compacted hyphae and bark cells; exciple thin, usually colourless; pseudoparaphyses slender, 1-1.5 μm thick, the cells 8-16 μm long, often with elongate, oily vacuoles; downwardly projecting periphysoids present near the ostiole. Asci 8-spored, narrowly ovoid, fissitunicate, with two functional wall layers. Ascospores 1-septate, much constricted at septum, with somehow unequal cells, each cell with an obvious median constriction, hyaline, clavate with rounded apices, 14.5-22 x 5-8 μm, with a c. 2 μm thick (in K), distinct perispore. Pycnidia black, 50-100 μm across, with either macro- or microconidia; macroconidia hyaline, bacilliform, 8-11 x 1.8-2.2 μm; microconidia bacilliform, 4.7-6 x 1 μm. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a temperate early coloniser of smooth bark, found especially in clearings of long-established deciduous woodlands near rivers, on young twigs of e.g. Fraxinus and Corylus; probably non-lichenised.
