Description: Thallus crustose, poorly evident, endosubstratic to thinly episubstratic, forming small, pale grey patches. Apothecia biatorine/zeorine, sessile, 0.2-0.5 mm across, with an orange to orange-yellow, flat, epruinose disc and a paler, usually yellow proper margin; a grey thalline margin is sometimes visible only on the lower surface of apothecia. Thalline exciple ecorticate or with a very poorly developed cortex; proper exciple 20-40(-50) μm thick, consisting of radiating, thick-walled hyphae with long and narrow short-ellipsoid cells; epithecium orange, K+ red, C-; hymenium colourless, 55-70 μm high; paraphyses simple, submoniliform, up to 2.5-3 μm wide at apex; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 1-septate, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, (8.5-)10-12.5(-15) x (5-)6-9 μm, the septum 3-6 μm thick. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; apothecia K+ red, C-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances; apothecia with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).
Note: superficially similar to A. cerinella, but with a different number of spores per ascus. Also the ecology and distribution are different: A. cerinelloides has a more northen distribution and usually occurs on Populus tremula, or even on twigs of conifers (Vondrák in litt.).
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: bark
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
Poorly known taxon in need of further study
