Synonyms: Ludovicia placophylla (Ach.) Trevis.
Distribution: N - Frl (Tretiach & Hafellner 2000), Ven (Tretiach 1993), TAA (Nascimbene 2008b), Lomb, Piem (Isocrono & al. 2004), VA (Piervittori & al. 2004).
Description: Primary thallus crustose, well-delimited, glaucous grey-green to brownish, thick, forming rosettes to 12 cm diam., the centre subsquamulose, the margin with radiating marginal lobes, often covered by peltate, light-coloured, fragile, mostly marginal schizidia to 0.5 mm diam, Marginal lobes to 6 mm broad, flattened, contiguous, raised at the tips. Apothecia frequent, without a thalline margin, terminal on smooth, subfruticose, solid stipes, which are to 6 mm tall and 2 mm thick, corticated in lower part. Disc ochraceous to reddish brown, flat, margin often reflexed, to 4-5 mm broad. Epithecium yellowish brown; hymenium colourless, I-; paraphyses slender, simple or sparingly branched towards the tips, not anastomosing. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, unitunicate, thin-walled, the apex truncate, I-. Ascospores 1(-2)-celled, hyaline, fusiform, 8-14 x 2-4 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ yellow, C-, KC+ orange, P+ orange, UV+ pale yellow. Chemistry: stictic acid complex.
Note: an arctic-alpine to boreal-montane, probably circumpolar lichen found on sandy-clay soil in open stands (e.g. montane-subalpine grasslands), often in moderately disturbed habitats, sometimes reaching the Alpine belt. Probably restricted to the Alps in Italy.
