Naetrocymbe fumago (Wallr.) Magnus

Fl. Tirol, Vorarlberg, Leichtenstein, III, Pilze 3: 374. 1905. Basionym: Verrucaria fumago Wallr. - Fl. crypt. Germ. 1: 298, 1831.
Synonyms: Arthopyrenia fumago (Wallr.) Körb.; Spermatodium fumago (Wallr.) Trevis.
Distribution: N - Ven (Jatta 1909-1911), TAA (Magnus 1905, Nimis & al. 2018), Piem (Baglietto & Carestia 1880).
Description: Thallus crustose, appearing as a grey-black, velvety-spongy patch, probably not lichenized. Perithecia black, minute, 0.1-0.2 mm across, glossy. Involucrellum black, K-; exciple colourless; interascal filaments indistinct in mature perithecia. Asci 8-spored, ventricose to obpyriform, fissitunicate. Ascospores at first 3-septate and hyaline, then submuriform and pigmented, each cell guttulate, 24-28 x 10-12 µm. Photobiont probably absent. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: probably without lichen substances.
Note: a probably non-lichenized species, found on branches of various deciduous trees (e.g. Tilia, Populus, Alnus) throughout Europe, with a few historical records from the Alps.
