Acarospora praeruptorum H. Magn.

Svensk bot. Tidskr. 18: 330, 1924.
Synonyms: Acarospora nitrophila auct. ital. non H. Magn.; Acarospora nitrophila H. Magn.; Acarospora nitrophila var. praeruptorum (H. Magn.) Clauzade & Cl. Roux; Acarospora nitrophila var. tiroliensis (H. Magn.) Clauzade & Cl. Roux
Distribution: N - TAA (Nascimbene 2004), Lomb, Piem (Morisi & Sereno 1995, Matteucci & al. 2013, Giordani & al. 2014), VA (Piervittori & Isocrono 1999, Isocrono & al. 2008, Favero-Longo & Piervittori 2009, Matteucci & al. 2015c), Lig. C - Tosc, Marc (Nimis & Tretiach 1999). S - Bas (Nimis & Tretiach 1999), Si (Nimis & al. 1996b, Grillo & Caniglia 2004).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, yellowish brown to brown when dry, greenish brown when wet, areolate-subsquamulose, the areoles contiguous, 1-2 mm wide, smooth, almost substipitate, sometimes indistinctly lobulate, the lower surface brown. Algal layer continuous or interrupted by narrow hyphal bands (mostly 10 μm wide), without algal palisades. Apothecia lecanorine, immersed in the areoles, 1-6 per areole, to 1.2 mm across, mostly rounded, with a concave to flat, dark reddish brown disc (usually darker than thallus), and a rather thick thalline margin rich in algae. Proper exciple thin, poorly developed; epithecium brown; hymenium colourless, 70-130 μm high; paraphyses 1.5-2(-2.5) μm thick at base, the apical cells to 5(-6) μm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 100-200-spored, clavate, the apical dome K/I-. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 3-5 x 1.5-2 μm. Pycnidia immersed. Conidia ellipsoid, c. 3 x 3.5 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a lichen of steeply inclined to rain-sheltered surfaces of basic siliceous rocks, usually in species-poor communities, mostly near settlements. This species has been often considered as a synonym of A. nitrophila H. Magn, but according to Knudsen & Kocourková (2017) that species is hitherto known only from Scandinavia, and all records of A. nitrophila from Italy should be considered as dubious. For the time being, I place here all records of A. nitrophila from Italy.
