Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, chalky white to pale grey, rimose-areolate, 0.05-0.2 mm thick, rarely endosubstratic and poorly evident, usually poorly delimited, without a distinct prothallus, the areoles 0.2-0.5 mm wide, angular, usually flat, the surface often finely cracked. Apothecia biatorine/zeorine, 0.2-0.7(-0.9) mm across, bright orange, 1-2(-3) per areole, at first concave and immersed, then sessile and constricted at base, with a flat to slightly convex, rough disc, and a 0.05-0.15 mm thick, smooth, concolorous or paler proper margin. Thalline margin absent or developed only at the base of young apothecia, rich in algal cells; proper margin prosoplectenchymatous, with a 20-30 μm thick cortex and a colourless medulla of radially arranged hyphae; epithecium orange, granular, 8-20 μm high, K+ red; hymenium colourless, 50-80 μm high; paraphyses simple or forked, 1.5-2 μm thick at mid-level, the apical cells 4-6 μm wide; hypothecium colourless, prosoplectenchymatous. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, (8-)9-13 x 5-6(-7) μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) (2-)3-4(-5) μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; apothecia K+ red. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances; apothecia with unidentified anthraquinones.
