Description: Thallus crustose, effuse, whitish or pale grey, ecorticate, immersed in the bark. Perithecia black, 0.5-1 mm across, one-quarter to almost entirely immersed. Involucrellum hemispherical to globose, brown-black surrounding a globose, colourless exciple, the ostiole often eccentric and sometimes papillate; hymenial gel colourless, I-, K/I-: hamathecium of persistent, slender, sparingly branched or anastomosing, long-celled pseudoparaphyses; periphyses absent. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, K/I–, fissitunicate, the apical dome with a broad ocular chamber surmounted by a hemispherical meniscus-like structure. Ascospores 1-septate, not constricted at septum, hyaline, ellipsoid with rounded ends, the septum thick, (15-)17-30 x 8-13 μm, uniseriately arranged in the asci, surrounded by a perispore which appears verrucose in water, smooth in K. Pycnidia black, 0.1-0.25 mm in diam.; conidiogenous cells cylindrical, elongate; conidia acrogenous, simple, colourless, bacilliform, 3-5 x 0.8-1 μm. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a mild-temperate lichen found on the rough bark of mature broad-leaved trees (both deciduous and evergreen) in open woodlands, with optimum in the submediterranean belt; almost extinct in the lowlands of the North. The recently-described var. rhododendri Hinter. should be looked for in the subalpine belt of the Alps.
