Flot. ex Körb., Syst. Lich. Germ.: 354, 1855.
Synonyms: Clauzade & Cl. Roux; Leiophloea ungeri (Körb.) Trevis.; Sagedia ungeri (Körb.) Anzi; Thelidium pyrenophorum f. intermedium Asta; Verrucaria ungeri var. decussata Garov.
Distribution: N - Ven (Ravera & al. 2021), TAA (Nascimbene & al. 2022), Lomb, Piem (TSB 32944), Emil (Fariselli & al. 2020).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, thick, dirty white, granular to verrucose. Perithecia black, 0.3-0.8 mm across, half immersed in the thallus. Involucrellum well-developed, covering the upper third of the perithecium; exciple dark in upper part, colourless or pale brown in lower part; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, ellipsoid to clavate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of a delicate rostrum. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, ellipsoid, 19-32 x 9-14 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on inclined surfaces of calciferous rocks in upland areas. Closely related to T. pyrenophorum, from which it differs in the thick, verrucose thallus, this species seems to be widespread in the Alps.
