Description: Thallus squamulose, heteromerous, green-brown to greenish. Squamules 0.5-1.5 mm wide, c. 0.2 mm thick, flat, contiguous to overlapping, incised. Lower surface dark brown, with brown, 4-5 µm thick rhizohyphae. Upper cortex pseudoparenchymatous, c. 30 µm thick; medulla white, subparaplectenchymatous; lower cortex thin, of 1-3 layers of isodiametrical cells with brown-black walls. Perithecia black, immersed, broadly pyriform, without involucrellum, up to 0.3 mm across. Exciple soon darkening, black in old perithecia; hymenium colourless, I+ blue or I-; paraphyses absent, substituted by stout, 15-25 µm long periphyses; hymenial algae rounded, 3-5 µm in diam. Asci 2-spored, clavate to cylindrical-clavate, bi- and fissitunicate, thin-walled, the wall non-amyloid. Ascospores muriform, colourless to pale brown at maturity, ellipsoid, often of different sizes in the same ascus, the largest ones 30-50 x 14-22 µm. Pycnidia rare, black, immersed. Conidia hyaline, bacilliform. Photobiont chlorococcoid (probably Diplosphaera), present in both thallus and hymenium. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: this species is known only from the type collection on sandstone, and from the type of E. schisticola on non-calcareous schist. Indicator values are tentative.
