Description: Thallus crustose, usually conspicuous, whitish to pale grey, effuse or delimited by a black prothallus. Perithecia 0.3-0.4(-0.5) mm across, hemispherical to globose, simple or compound, quarter- to almost totally immersed, usually numerous, with a wall of cellular hyphae usually without bark cells, with a usually well-differentiated involucrellum; lower part of wall pale or colourless. Hamathecium of slender, branched and anastomosed, long-celled pseudoparaphyses, c. 1 μm thick; periphyses absent; hymenial gel I-. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, K/I-, fissitunicate, the apical dome with an indistinct ocular chamber. Ascospores 1-septate, uniseriate in the asci, hyaline, ovoid- to fusiform-ellipsoid, (9-)12-16 x 4.5-6(-7) μm, without a distinct perispore. Pycnidia of two types: (a) 100-200 μm diam., with subglobose to ellipsoid macroconidia 2.3-4 x 1.8-2.7 μm, extruded as a blob of conidia bound by mucilage; or (b) 40-100 μm diam., more or less immersed, hemispherical or globose, with globose microconidia 1-1.5 μm diam. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: no lichen substances.
Note: a mild-temperate, probably holarctic species found on deciduous trees in open and humid woodlands, e.g. along creeks and rivers on Fraxinus, Populus and Salix, sometimes also on oaks.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: bark
Photobiont: Trentepohlia
