Distribution: N - TAA, Piem, VA (Piervittori & Isocrono 1999).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, rather thick, grey-brown to pinkish-violet-grey, finely rimose-areolate, the areoles flat, contiguous, delimited by a black-brown prothallus. Medulla white, I-. Apothecia lecideine, sessile, mostly rounded, to 1 mm across, brown-black to black, sometimes slightly pruinose, with a flat disc and a concolorous, raised, persistent, entire proper margin. Proper exciple brown in outer part, paler within; epithecium brown; hymenium colourless or pale brown in upper part; paraphyses weakly conglutinated, simple or sparingly branched in upper part, 1.5-2 μm thick at mid-level, the apical cell clavate, 4-5 μm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, with a thin external and internal K/I+ dark blue cap surrounded by a thick K/I+ pale blue apical cap, and with a K/I- apical tube in tholus, Fuscidea-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid, 7-10 x 5-6.5 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; medulla UV+ bluish white. Chemistry: medulla with divaricatic acid.
Note: a mainly western species with isolated outposts in the Central European mountains, found on steeply inclined, sheltered surfaces of siliceous rocks, usually in upland areas.
