Tephromela is a cosmopolitan genus of c. 30 species found in temperate to tropical regions on bark, wood, rock, or on other lichens (see Hertel 1984, Hertel & Rambold 1985, Rambold 1993). Its familial placement was for a long time unclear: preliminary molecular data (Miadlikowska & al. 2006, Arup & al. 2007) indicated that it does belong neither in the Lecanoraceae nor in the Ramalinaceae, but is related to Mycoblastus, being currently placed in the Tephromelataceae (Hafellner 1984, see also Miadlikowska & al. 2014). The T. atra-complex was studied by Muggia & al. (2014) and Cestaro & al. (2016). This key includes the 4 infrageneric taxa known to occur in Italy, plus 2 other species whose presence in Italy is possible
