Glypholecia scabra (Pers.) Müll. Arg.

Hedwigia, 31: 156, 1892. Basionym: Urceolaria scabra Pers. - Ann. Wetter. Gesellsch. Ges. Naturk., 2: 10, 1811.
Synonyms: Acarospora grumulosa (Schaer.) Hue; Acarospora rhagadiosa (Ach.) Th. Fr.; Acarospora scabra (Pers.) Th. Fr.; Glypholecia candidissima Nyl.; Glypholecia rhagadiosa (Ach.) Nyl.; Glypholecia scaberrima (Hue) Zahlbr.
Distribution: N - Piem (Isocrono & al. 2003), VA (Piervittori & Isocrono 1999), Lig (TSB 33358).
Description: Thallus squamulose-subfoliose, peltate-subumbilicate, usually monophyllous, 0.3-2.5 cm wide, 0.3-1.2 mm thick, attached with a broad, central stipe. Squamules easily detached from the rock, isolated to crowded. Upper surface deeply cracked to almost subareolate, brown, but partially or totally white-pruinose, pale reddish brown when wet; lower surface white to pale brown, erhizinate. Upper cortex paraplectenchymatous, 40-50 µm thick, brownish in upper part, greyish in lower part, with an up to 50 µm thick epinecral layer; algal layer continuous; medulla chalky white, densely filled with calcium oxalate crystals; lower cortex absent. Apothecia lecanorine, often compound, the individual ones punctiform to irregular in outline, each with a proper margin, forming 0.7-1(-2.5) mm wide aggregates; apothecial discs epruinose, scabrid, red-brown to dark brown, the margins white-pruinose, slightly raised or level with discs. Exciple of parallel hyphae, 20-25 µm thick, I+ blue; epithecium brownish; hymenium colourless, 100-120(-140) µm high, I+ blue; paraphyses coherent 2-2.5 µm thick, the apical cells up to 4 µm wide; hypothecium colourless, 40-50 µm high, I+ blue. Asci (50-)100-spored, clavate, the tholus I+ slightly blue, without axial structures and ocular chamber. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, globose, 3-4 µm wide. Pycnidia rare, flask-shaped. Conidia ellipsoid, c. 2 x 1 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-. Chemistry: gyrophoric acid.
Note: an incompletely holarctic species of dry-continental areas, found on exposed surfaces of calciferous and base-rich siliceous rocks; in Italy this characteristic species with an umbilicate thallus is restricted to the dry Alpine valleys with a continental climate.
Growth form: Foliose, umbilicate
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
Subcontinental: restricted to areas with a dry-subcontinental climate (e.g. dry Alpine valleys, parts of Mediterranean Italy)
