Description: Thallus foliose to squamulose, gelatinous when wet, dark brownish-greenish black, forming up to 5 cm wide cushions. Lobes flattened, ascending, 3-5 mm broad, smooth, with rounded ends and undulate to crenulate margins, bearing abundant, thin, transparent hairs, sometimes with granular isidia. Lower surface with sparse white, fasciculate hapters. Upper and lower cortex only partly developed, paraplectenchymatous, formed by 1-3 layers of cells. Apothecia rare, adnate, 0.3-0.7(-1.5) mm across, with a brown, smooth, concave to flat disc and a hairy proper margin. Proper exciple paraplectenchymatous; epithecium brownish; hymenium colourless, 60-90 μm high; paraphyses branched, septate, swollen at apices; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, fissitunicate, the thickened apex with a K/I+ blue ring. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, (15-)18-22(-26) x 5-7(-9) μm. Pycnidia semi-immersed. Conidia bacilliform, 9-16 x c. 1 μm. Photobiont cyanobacterial, nostocoid. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a cool-temperate to arctic-alpine lichen found amongst bryophytes on rocks or on soil in open shrublands and grasslands on basic siliceous substrata.
