Distribution: N - TAA (Nascimbene 2005), Lomb, Piem.
Description: Thallus crustose-placodioid to subfoliose, episubstratic, loosely attached, grey-white to brownish or dark glaucous grey, sometimes darkened at lobe-tips, turning bright green when wet, forming regular to irregular rosettes to 6 cm or more in diam. Lobes elongate, radiating, overlapping, several cm long and 0.4-1.3 mm wide, mostly convex; lower surface white, erhizinate. Upper cortex paraplectenchymatous, brownish; medulla white, loose, I-. Apothecia lecanorine to 1.8 mm diam., sessile to short-stalked, with a flat to convex, red-brown to brown-black disc, and a prominent, sometimes finally excluded thalline margin. Epithecium reddish brown, N+ green; hymenium colourless, 60-75(-90) μm high; paraphyses, weakly branched, the apical cells swollen and c. 3 μm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, the thin outer coat K/I+ blue, the wall and apical dome K/I-. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 10-13 x (6-)8-10 μm. Pycnidia black, immersed. Conidia hyaline, bacilliform, 4.5-6 x c. 1 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a mainly boreal-montane species found on acid to slightly calciferous rocks in the inundation zone on shores of lakes, brooks, and streams, mostly in upland areas; to be looked for further throughout the Alps.
