Distribution: C - Tosc (Pišút 1997), Sar (Pišút 1997). S - Cal (Brackel & Puntillo 2016, Raavera & al. 2016).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, rather thick, whitish, grey or pale grey-brown, at first rimose-areolate, but soon covered with warts. Sterile warts 0.5-0.7 mm wide, almost hemispherical, with a flattened, whitish-pruinose (apparently sorediate) top. Apothecia immersed into up to 2 mm wide fertile warts, 1-6 per wart, with an expanded, round, flat, black but heavily and coarsely white-pruinose disc, and a thick uneven, pruinose thalline margin. Epithecium dark brown, with numerous crystals, K-; hymenium colourless; paraphyses conglutinated, 1.5-2 µm thick; hypothecium colourless. Asci 1-spored, broadly cylindrical, the apex with a broad ocular chamber, the outer sheath K/I+ blue, otherwise K/I-, Pertusaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, narrowly fusiform, 100-300 x 50-100 µm, the wall up to 4-5 µm thick, smooth. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ yellow turning red, C-, KC-, P+ yellow-orange. Chemistry: norstictic acid.
Note: on steeply inclined to vertical surfaces of more or less basic siliceous rocks, often near the coast; most common in Tyrrhenian Italy.
