Description: Thallus foliose-umbilicate to subsquamulose-umbilicate, 0.5-1.5(-2.5) cm across, usually polyphyllous, rarely monophyllous and deeply lobed, yellowish green to grey-green, attached by a central holdfast. Lobes distinct to indistinct in subsquamulose forms, coarsely crenate-incised, concave to sometimes thick and convex towards thallus center. Upper surface sometimes pruinose and blackened at margins, smooth to roughened, shiny to dull; lower surface blue-black, smooth to wrinkled, erhizinate. Upper cortex of strongly gelatinized hyphae, often heavily inspersed with crystals, the cell walls with isolichenan; medulla white, loose, but often filled with granules; lower cortex usually thicker than the upper one. Apothecia lecanorine, 0.4-1.7 mm across, at first adnate, then sessile and constricted at base, with a concave to flat, rarely convex, bluish black, more or less pruinose disc, and an entire to flexuous-crenate thalline margin. Epithecium greenish to greenish black, usually with a superficial layer of granules; hymenium more or less colourless; paraphyses mostly simple, swollen at apex; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the tholus with a strongly amyloid lateral part, a non-amyloid broadly diverging axial mass with a thick, non-amyloid cap above, and a weakly amyloid outer layer Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid to subglobose, c. 8-13 x 4-7.5 µm. Pycnidia black, immersed, usually common. Conidia thread-like. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: upper cortex K- or rarely K+ yellowish, C-, KC+ yellow, P-, UV-; medulla K-, C- or rarely C+ red, KC- or rarely KC+ red, P- or P+ yellow, UV-. Chemistry: upper cortex with usnic acid; medulla with no substances, with various fatty acids, or with psoromic and/or (rarely) lecanoric acid and/or other unidentified substances.Note: a chemically variable, holarctic lichen found on bird's perching siliceous rocks, especially in upland areas; most common in the Alps, but also present on the high Mediterranean mountains.
