Blastenia xerothermica Vondrák, Arup & I.V.Frolov

( in Vondrák & al.) J. Syst. Evol. 58, 3: 322, 2020.
Synonyms: Caloplaca hungarica auct. ital. p.p.
Distribution: N - Piem (Vondrák & al. 2020), Lig. C - Tosc (Loppi & al. 1997c, 1999a), Laz (Bartoli & al. 1997), Sar (Zedda & Sipman 2001, Zedda 2002, Rizzi & al. 2011, Cossu 2013. , Neuwirth 2018 as B. hungarica, Vondrák & al. 2020, Di Nuzzo & al. 2022 as B. hungarica). S - Si (Vondrák & al. 2020).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, grey, rather thin (<100 μm thick) forming up to 1 cm wide patches. Apothecia biatorine, rusty orange or pale orange-red, sessile, 0.3-0.7 mm across, with a usually flat disc and a smooth, somewhat paler, thin proper margin (thalline margin always absent). Proper exciple prosoplectenchymatous, orange in outer part, colourless within, amyloid, C-; epithecium orange-brown, granular, K+ red, C-; hymenium colourless, not inspersed with oil droplets, amyloid; paraphyses sparingly branched, 1.5-2 μm thick in lower part, the apical cells only slightly swollen; hypothecium colourless to pale yellowish brown. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, (10-)13–15(-16) x (4-)5-6(-8) μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 4-6 µm. Pycnidia uncommon, dark grey in upper part, with the Cinereorufa-green pigment. Conidia bacilliform, rarely narrowly ellipsoid, 3-5 x 1-1.5 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; apothecia K+ red, C-. Chemistry: non-chlorinated anthraquinones in apothecia; chlorinated anthraquinones strongly reduced or absent; thallus without anthraquinones; Cinereorufa-green pigment usually hardly detectable, but present around pycnidial ostioles and in injured apothecia. For further details see Vondrák & al. (2020).
Note: a recently-described species growing on twigs of trees and shrubs, more rarely on trunks, in the Mediterranean Region, whose distinction from B. hungarica requires ITS DNA barcode, the two species being morphologically almost identical. They have, however, a different distribution and altitudinal range, B. xerothermica being bound to eu-Mediterranean maquis vegetation. Earlier records of B. hungarica from eu-Mediterranean areas of Liguria, Tuscany, Latium and Sardinia (see Nimis 2016) have been attributed to this species.
