Epilichen glauconigellus (Nyl.) Hafellner

Nova Hedwigia, 30: 678, 1979 (1978). Basionym: Lecidea glauconigella Nyl. - Lich. Scand.: 238, 1861
Synonyms:
Distribution:
Description: Thallus inapparent, doubtfully lichenized, the hyphae developing inside the thalli of Baeomyces-species, the infected parts usually discoloured. Apothecia lecideine, black, 0.2-0.4 mm across, usually discrete, with a flat to slightly convex disc and a thin, persistent proper margin. Proper exciple dark brown, 15-50 µm thick laterally; epithecium pale to dark brown; hymenium colourless to pale brown, 50-90 µm high, K- K/+ blue; paraphyses richly branched and anastomosing from the base, 2-2.5 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells swollen, up to 3 µm wide, with a diffuse brown pigment; hypothecium brown to dark brown, of radially arranged hyphae, K-. Asci 8-spored, elongate-clavate, K/I+ blue, the apex of tholus K/I+ deep blue, 45-60(-65) x 12-16 µm. Ascospores 1-septate and slightly constricted at septum, brown, ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid, (7-)10.5-14.5(-17) x (5-)6-9(-10) µm, the wall thick, smooth, the septum thickened, with an internal torus. Photobiont absent or chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a doubtfully lichenized species starting the life-cycle on species of Baeomyces (mostly B. rufus); widespread in Northern Europe, very rare in the Central European mountains, with a few records from the Eastern Alps (Austria). To be looked for in the Italian Alps.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: soil, terricolous mosses, and plant debris
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
paras Baeomyces-species, especially B. rufus
