Lepra pulvinata (Erichsen) Hafellner

in Hafellner & Türk, Stapfia, 104, 1: 172, 2016. Basionym: Pertusaria pulvinata Erichsen - Rabenhorsts. Krypt.-Fl., 2 ed., 9, 5.1: 524, 1936
Synonyms:
Distribution: N - Lig - C - Tosc, Laz. S - Si.
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, continuous to fissured, whitish, pale grey or greenish grey, often weakly zoned at margin, delimited by a white prothallus, tasting extremely bitter. Soralia at first punctiform and discrete, <0.5 mm across, arising at the top of small, papilliform, isidia-like outgrowths, the soredia finally covering most of the thallus surface except the outer border. Apothecia extremely rare. Asci 1-spored, broadly cylindrical, the apex without a distinct ocular chamber, the outer sheath K/I+ blue, otherwise K/I–, with an inner extensible layer, Pertusaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 130-150 x 40-50 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; soralia and medulla K-, C-, KC+ fleeting violet, P-, UV-. Chemistry: picrolichenic acid.
Note: a variously interpreted species, often considered as a mere form of L. amara, apparently frequent in central-western Europe on isolated wayside trees. The Italian distribution is poorly known, and several records may be hidden under those of L. amara.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: bark
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by soredia, or soredia-like structures (e.g. blastidia)
