Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, black to dark brown, occasionally with a copper to brown-red tinge, areolate, the areoles separate, angular, 0.1-0.5(-1.5) mm wide, the peripheral ones rarely slightly elongate, forming up to 6 cm wide patches, without a distinct pro- or hypothallus. In section the thallus is pseudoparenchymatous throughout, without an epinecral layer, sometimes with a poorly defined, 12.5-27 μm thick “cortex” composed of 2-5 rows of rounded, 5-12 μm wide cells with up to 3 μm thick, brown walls. Apothecia pycnoascocarps (developing from pycnidia), lecanorine-aspicilioid, immersed in the areoles, 0.1-0.4 mm across, at first punctiform, then with an expanded, concave to flat, black disc, and a very thin, finally often excluded thalline margin. Proper exciple paraplectenchymatous, poorly developed, 8-18 μm wide, colourless in inner part, dark brown to copper red in outer and upper parts; epithecium dark brown to copper red, sometimes with a purple tinge, 9-21 μm high, K+ blue-purple; hymenium colourless, 62-95 μm high, I+ wine-red, K/I+ blue; paraphyses strongly moniliform, branched in upper part, the apical cells 5-8 μm wide, with dark brown to copper red pigmented walls and a surrounding hood; hypothecium colourless, opaque, up to 100 mm thick. Asci 8-spored, subglobose, unitunicate-rostrate, the wall composed of an outer, non-expansible and an inner, expansible layer surrounding the protoplast as an amyloid collar, which expands during spore release into a long, tapering rostrum, the outer wall layer strongly amyloid. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, sigmoid, lunate to falcate or irregularly curved and twisted, 18-35 x (3-)3.5-6(-6.5) μm. Pycnidia frequent, laminal, immersed, globose, up to 180 μm across, the wall colourless, the ostiolar region dark brown to copper red. Conidia simple, colourless, ellipsoid to cylindrical, 2.5-4 x 1-1.5 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ blue-purple, C-, KC-, P-, UV-, I+ reddish. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note:
