Distribution: C - Sar.

Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, areolate, brown, developing on the thalli of Circinaria calcarea and related species on calcareous rocks. Areoles scattered or most often contiguous and clustered, forming dark islands on the thallus of the host, 0.4-0.7(-1) mm wide, round to angular, often with a whitish margin; lower surface pale brown. Upper cortex 30-40 µm thick, reddish brown in upper part; algal layer even, continuous. Apothecia aspicilioid, mostly round, 0.2-0.5 mm across, immersed in the areoles, 1(-3) per areole, with a concave, smooth disc, and a slightly raised thalline margin. Epithecium brownish; hymenium colourless, 85-100 µm high, I+ dark blue; paraphyses coherent, 1.5-2(-2.5) µm thick at base, the apical cells slightly swollen, 3-4 µm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci c. 100-spored, clavate, the apical dome K/I-. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid to subglobose, 3-4 x 2-2.5 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV. Chemistry: without lichen substances.

Note: a xeric subtropical species described from Central Asia, only known from a single station in Italy, on limestone in a very sunny and dry situation. The Italian record - the only one from Europe - needs reconfirmation.
