Flavoplaca granulosa (Müll. Arg.) Arup, Frödén & Søchting

in Arup & al., Nord. J. Bot., 31: 45, 2013. Basionym: Amphiloma granulosum Müll. Arg. - Mém. Soc. Phys. Hist. Nat. Genève, 16: 380, 1862.
Synonyms: Caloplaca granulosa (Müll. Arg.) J. Steiner; Caloplaca granulosa var. sardonia Nimis & Poelt?; Placodium granulosum (Müll. Arg.) Hepp
Distribution: N - VG, Frl (vidi!), Ven (vidi!), TAA (Nascimbene & al. 2022), Emil (Fariselli & al. 2020). C - Tosc, Marc (Nimis & Tretiach 1999), Umb (Ravera & al. 2006), Laz, Abr (Nimis & Tretiach 1999, Gheza & al. 2021), Mol (Nimis & Tretiach 1999, Caporale & al. 2008), Sar. S - Camp (Aprile & al. 2003b, Garofalo & al. 2010), Pugl (Nimis & Tretiach 1999), Bas, Cal (Puntillo 1996), Si (Grillo 1998, Grillo & Caniglia 2004).
Description: Thallus crustose-placodioid, episubstratic, orange to orange-yellow, forming regular or irregular, up to 3(-4) cm wide rosettes, several thalli often coalescing to cover larger surfaces. Lobes c. 0.5 mm wide, up to 2(-3) mm long, contiguous, radiating from the center; central part of thallus densely covered in granulose to finger-like, up to 0.1 mm thick isidia which form an areolate-isidiate crust. Apothecia not always present, orange, up to 1 mm across, with a flat to convex disc and a usually isidiate-granulose thalline margin. Epithecium orange, K+ red; hymenium colourless; paraphyses swollen at tips, the apical cell up to 8 µm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid, 10-16 x 5-9 µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 3-6 µm (>1/4 of spore length). Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K+ red, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).
Note: a mild-temperate lichen found on compact limestone, more rarely on dolomite, especially on weakly inclined faces with periodical seepage of nitrogen-rich solutions; the var. sardonia Nimis & Poelt, lacking the typical isidioid granules, seems to be the most widespread morph in Sardinia.
Growth form: Crustose placodiomorph
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by isidia, or isidia-like structures (e.g. schizidia)
On otherwise dry surfaces with short periods of water seepage after rain
