Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, well-delimited, forming up to 2 cm wide, at first round, then irregular patches on the thalli of endolithic Bagliettoa-species, usually dark orange to grey-orange (orange-yellow in shade-forms), often thinly and indistincly lobulate at margins, the lobules 0.1-0.3 mm wide, several patches tending to merge, covering much larger surfaces. Cortex para- or prosoplectenchymatous, of thin-walled cells; medulla thin, indistinct. Apothecia frequent, scattered to crowded, immersed to adnate, 0.15-0.4 mm wide, with a flat to slightly convex, dark orange disc, and a more or less concolourous or slightly paler proper margin. Proper exciple of irregularly radiating, thick-walled hyphae; epithecium orange, granular, K+ red; hymenium and hypothecium colourless; paraphyses usually simple, sometimes sparingly branched above, the upper cells enlarged. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 1-septate, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, 9-15 x (4-)5-8 μm, the septum 3-7 μm thick. Photobiont: chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K+ red, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).
Note: a mainly warm-temperate species found on compact limestone and, more rarely, dolomite, in sheltered situations, with optimum in open woodlands, in the Mediterranean belt confined to more humid-shaded situations, growing on the thalli of Bagliettoa-species with an involucrellum, especially B. parmigerella and B. parmigera (Roux in litt.). The species is morphologically variable but, pending further study, it is still treated here in a very broad sense (for a different arrangement see Roux & coll. 2014). In the past, it might have been confused with F. oasis, and the Italian samples need revision.
