Frutidella caesioatra (Schaer.) Kalb

Hoppea, 55: 582, 1994. Basionym: Lecidea caesioatra Schaer. - Naturwiss. Anz., 2: 10 not., 1818.
Synonyms: Lecidea arctica Sommerf.; Lecidella arctica (Sommerf.) Körb.; Lecidella caesioatra (Schaer.) Kalb
Distribution: N - Frl (Nascimbene & al. 2021), Ven, TAA, Lomb, Piem (Isocrono & al. 2004), VA (Piervittori & Isocrono 1999).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, rather thick, whitish, grey or blackish brown, of convex, subisidioid or almost subfruticulose, 0.1-0.2 mm wide, contiguous granules forming a compact crust. Apothecia biatorine, sessile, (0.3-)0.5-1(-1.2) mm across, with an often tuberculate, black but often bluish-pruinose, strongly convex disc, and a thin, usually indistinct and soon excluded proper margin. Proper exciple almost colourless, of radially arranged hyphae; epithecium not well delimited from the hymenium, deep bluish green, K+ green, N+ red; hymenium (including epithecium), 50-70 µm high, colourless in lower part; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched and anastomosing, the apical cells not or only slightly thickened; hypothecium pale reddish brown to almost violet, K+ reddish-orange. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion with parallel or diverging flanks, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, (12-)15-19(-25) x 5-7(-9) µm. Pycnidia dark, globose to pyriform, c. 0.1 mm in diam. Conidia thread-like, 12-25 x 0.7-1 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid, the cells 6-12 µm in diam. Spot tests: thallus K- (or sometimes K+ weakly yellowish), C-, KC+ orange (esp. in the medulla), P- or P+ faintly yellowish, UV+ bluish white. Chemistry: sphaerophorin, sometimes thiophanic acid and rarely traces of asemon and isoarthothelin.
Note: an arctic-alpine lichen found on silicicolous mosses, especially Andreaea and Grimmia, in places above or near treeline with a long snow-lie, more rarely directly on rock; probably restricted to the Alps in Italy.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: soil, terricolous mosses, and plant debris
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
