Description: Thallus crustose, generally inconspicuous, immersed to thinly superficial, uneven to warted, sometimes rimose-cracked, pale to dark grey, sometimes delimited by a dark prothallus. Apothecia common, biatorine, up to 1.3 mm across (but forms on twigs may have much smaller apothecia, 0.3-0.5 mm across), scattered to crowded, with a first flat, finally usually convex, red-brown to black disc and a initially thick, finally often excluded, more or less concolorous, smooth to flexuose propr margin (colour of apothecia variable, often darker towards center of discs and with a red tinge towards margin). Epithecium and hymenium patchily yellow-brown, K+ red; hymenium colourless, not inspersed with oil droplets, amyloid; paraphyses branched, thickened to c. 3 µm at apex. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, very thick-walled at poles, ellipsoid, 13-15 x 7-10 µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 3-5 µm (1/5-1/3 of spore length). Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; apothecia K+ red, C+ purple. Chemistry: chlorinated anthraquinones (chrysophanol, chrysophanal and rhein) in the apothecia (both margin and disc).
Note: a warm-temperate species found mostly on the smooth bark of trees such as Alnus along rivers; apparently much more common in the past and presently extinct over much of its former range. Forms on twigs with small apothecia are practically indistinguishable from Blastenia subathallina. It is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Near-threatened” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c).
