in Holien & al., Herzogia, 29, 2/1: 413, 2016
Description: Thallus crustose, mostly endosubstratic, whitish grey or pale greenish grey, continuous or dissolved in small granules. Apothecia lecideine, rounded to irregular in outline, often tuberculate, 0.2-0.6(-0.8) mm across, with a pale yellowish brown, dark brown or brown-black, flat to strongly convex, epruinose disc, and a thin, slightly darker proper margin. Proper exciple of radiating, anastomosing hyphae; epithecium without epipsamma, colourless, yellowish, reddish brown or pale greyish green in dark apothecia, K-; hymenium colourless, 110 -140 μm high; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched and anastomosing; hypothecium pale yellow, 170-190 μm high, K+ intensifying golden yellow. Asci (8-)12-16-spored, cylindrical-clavate, the I+ blue tholus with a wide, I+ dark blue tube structure that expands towards the top, without a pale axial body, Micarea-type, c. 16-20 x 80 -95 μm. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, (3.5-)3.9-4.6(-4.8) x (6.5-)7.3-9(-10.8) μm. Pycnidia rare, globose, partly immersed, reddish brown, c. 80 μm across. Conidia filiform, 10-15 x 0.5- 0.8 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-; hypothecium K+ golden yellow. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances; hypothecium with secalonic acid A.
Note: a recently-described, probably holarctic species known from Scandinavia, Central Europe, the Caucasus and North America, growing on bark and wood, mostly in old-growth forests. The species, which perhaps belongs to Puttea, could be present also in the Italian Alps, and should be looked for there.
