Norw. J. Bot., 26: 221, 1979. Basionym: Acarospora patellata Bagl. - N. Giorn. Bot. Ital., 7: 245, 1875.
Synonyms: Heppia polyspora Tuck.; Peltula polyspora (Tuck.) Wetmore; Solorinaria abbatiana Faurel, Ozenda & Schotter
Distribution: N - Lig. C - Sar.
Description: Thallus squamulose, forming patches of variable width. Squamules contiguous to dispersed, orbicular to elongate, 0.5-2(-3) mm wide, 250-310 µm thick, pale to olivaceous brown or greyish green, dull, with smooth, thickened, darkened and upturned margins. Lower surface paler, attached by a central mat of rhizohyphae. Upper cortex absent; epinecral layer well-developed, 7-15(-20) µm thick, often with numerous air spaces; medulla paraplectenchymatous; lower cortex 30-40 µm thick, of 2-8 layers of isodiametrical cells. Apothecia immersed, 1(-3) per squamule, 0.5-1 mm across, with a reddish brown disc, and a slightly raised, sometimes poorly evident thalline margin. Proper exciple thin; epithecium brownish, K+ red-violet or rarely K-; hymenium colourless, 115-200 µm thick, I+ blue-green turning wine-red; paraphyses thin, sometimes anastomosing, rarely branched, the apical cells slightly swollen; hypothecium colourless. Asci >100-spored, clavate to obclavate, rostrate with a distinct, fringed external tunica, the wall I+ orange, K/I+ intensively blue. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, globose to subglobose, (4.5)6-8 µm wide, more rarely broadly ellipsoid, 6-8(-9) x (4.5-)5-7 µm. Pycnidia immersed, cerebriform. Conidia fusiform, 3.7-4.3 x 1.2-2.8 µm. Photobiont cyanobacterial, chroococcoid, one-celled. Spot tests: thallus and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a rare species found on soil in dry grasslands over siliceous substrata in the Mediterranean belt, also known from Alpine dry valleys.
Growth form: Crustose placodiomorph
Substrata: soil, terricolous mosses, and plant debris
Photobiont: cyanobacteria, filamentous (e.g. Nostoc, Scytonema)
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
Subcontinental: restricted to areas with a dry-subcontinental climate (e.g. dry Alpine valleys, parts of Mediterranean Italy)
