Phylloblastia inexpectata Sérus., Coppins & Lücking

Lichenologist, 39: 104, 2007.
Synonyms:
Distribution: S - Camp (Sérusiaux & al. 2007), Cal (Ravera & al. 2020b).
Description: Thallus crustose, very thinly episubstratic, mainly developed along the main vein of leaves, brownish green or pale greyish green, often with a pinkish tinge, forming 1-2(-5) mm wide patches. Cortex usually present only near the perithecia, formed of a single layer of cylindrical to irregular cells, some of them arranged in irregular rows. Perithecia sessile, at first hemispherical, but soon depressed at apex, 0.1-0.15 mm across, pinkish brown to finally almost black, sometimes with a darker red tinge around the ostiole. Exciple colourless, of compressed and vertically elongated hyphae, 10-15 µm thick laterally, the outer wall well-developed, subparaplectenchymatous, pale to dark brown, up to 20-25 µm thick. Periphyses always present, made of a layer of cells with a triangular-ovoid apex. Asci 8-spord, clavate or obovoid, fissitunicate, with a rather thin wall except at the apex, without any apical structure, the wall K/I- but the content K/I+ reddish brown. Ascospores (1-)3-septate, not constricted at septa, hyaline, fusiform-ellipsoid to cylindrical-ellipsoid, the upper median and distal cells slightly clavate, with rounded ends, (10-)14-16 x (4-)4.5-5 µm, the content K/I+ reddish brown. Photobiont chlorococcoid, the cells 5-10 µm wide. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a foliicolous, Atlantic-Macaronesian species, also known from the British Isles and Madeira. The only Italian station is a warm-humid coastal gorge hosting several other rare, oceanic-tropical lichens.
