Distribution: N - TAA (Nascimbene & al. 2022), Lomb, Piem (Morisi & Sereno 1995, Isocrono & al. 2004, Isocrono & Piervittori 2008), VA (Borlandelli & al. 1996, Piervittori & Isocrono 1997, 1999, Isocrono & al. 2008, Favero-Longo & Piervittori 2009, Matteucci & al. 2015c), Emil (Dalle Vedove & al. 2002), Lig. C - Sar.
Description: Thallus foliose, heteromerous, dorsiventral, forming orbicular, 3-8 cm wide rosettes. Lobes 0.5-1 mm wide, convex, with indented-crenulate margins. Upper surface whitish, pale grey to bluish-grey, epruinose, emaculate. Lower surface pale brown, with simple rhizines. Upper cortex paraplectenchymatous; medulla white; lower cortex prosoplectenchymatous, with the lowermost part gradually forming rounded, isodiametric cells. Apothecia common, lecanorine, sessile, 1-4 mm across, wich a black, flat, usually epruinose disc and a smooth thalline margin. Asci 8-spored, clavate, very thin-walled, with a K/I+ blue, tall tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-septate, brown, ellipsoid, 14-19 x 7-10 µm, the wall thickened at apex and at septum, Physcia-type. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P-; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: cortex with atranorin.
Note: on basic siliceous rocks, certainly rare in Italy and doubtfully distinct from P. stellaris. Earlier records from Southern Italy (see Nimis 1993: 532), being dubious, are not accepted here.
