Synonyms: Catapyrenium boccanum (Servít) Breuss
Distribution: N - VG, Ven. C - Tosc, Mol (Nimis & Tretiach 1999, Caporale & al. 2008). S - Si (Caniglia & Grillo 2001, 2006Grillo & Caniglia 2004).
Description: Thallus squamulose, pale to dark brown, the squamules 1.5-4 mm diam., 0.25-0.4 mm thick, closely adpressed, sparse to somehow overlapping, flat to weakly convex, rounded or lobulate, the margins markedly darker than the upper surface. Lower surface black throughout, attached by colourless, 4-6 μm thick rhizohyphae. Upper cortex 50-80 μm thick, paraplectenchymatous, with a 20-50 μm thick epinecral layer; medulla of globular cells; lower cortex weakly differentiated from the medulla, the lower cells strongly pigmented. Perithecia pyriform, up to 0.5 mm wide, without involucrellum, immersed in the squamules. Exciple colourless, c.20 μm thick; paraphyses absent, periphyses 2-3 μm thick. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, thin-walled, non-amyloid and without an ocular chamber. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, uniseriately arranged in the asci, ellipsoid, 12-16 x 5.5-7.5 μm. Pycnidia black, laminal, immersed, up to 0.4 mm across. Conidia oblong-ellipsoid, 3-4 x 1.5-1.8 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a Mediterranean to mild-temperate lichen growing on calciferous clayey soil, often also found on walls, including those of mortar; rare in Northern Italy, but probably more common in Southern Italy.
