Protoparmelia placentiformis (J. Steiner) Poelt

in Poelt & Leuckert, Nova Hedwigia, 52: 59, 1991. Basionym: Lecanora placentiformis J. Steiner - Ann. Mycol., 8: 233, 1910.
Synonyms:
Distribution: N - Lig (TSB 33429).
Description: Thallus crustose-placodioid, episubstratic, ochraceous brown, somehow glossy, forming orbicular, 1-4 cm wide rosettes on the thalli of Immersaria cupreoatra. Central areoles round to angular, 0.5-1.5 mm wide, contiguous, flattened, the marginal ones clearly elongate and radiating, 1-4 mm long and 1-2 mm wide, flat to slightly convex. Upper cortex scleroplectenchymatous, brown in upper part, 60-100 μm thick, overlain by a 20-40 μm thick epinecral layer; medulla white. Apothecia lecanorine, abundant especially on the central areoles, usually crowded, round to polygonal in outline, 0.5-1.2(-2) mm across, at first semi-immersed, then subsessile and constricted at base, with a flat to slightly convex, brown disc, and a thin, level with disc, finally almost excluded thalline margin. Epithecium brown, 15-20 μm high; hymenium colourless, 40-60 μm high; paraphyses sparingly branched, c. 1.5 μm thick, the apical cells to 3.5 μm wide; hypothecium colourless, 20-30 μm high. Asci 8-spored, clavate, approaching the Lecanora-type, with a well-developed amyloid tholus and a distinct, non-amyloid axial mass. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid, 6.5-10 x 5-6 μm. Pycnidia dark, immersed. Conidia filiform, curved, 19-30 μm long. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecial margin K+ yellow soon turning dark red (red crystals), C-, KC-, P+ orange or P-. Chemistry: thallus with norstictic and rangiformic acids.
Note: on sunny siliceous rock in dry upland areas, parasitic on Lecaimmeria cupreoatra. Described from arid parts of Asia, after the record in Macedonia, the Italian record (from Liguria) is the second finding from Europe. This characteristic lichen most probably does not belong to Protoparmelia s.str.
Growth form: Crustose placodiomorph
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
