Psoroglaena stigonemoides (Orange) Henssen

Bibl. Lichenol., 57: 203, 1995. Basionym: Macentina stigonemoides Orange - Lichenologist, 21: 229, 1989.
Synonyms: Leucocarpia stigonemoides (Orange) Hafellner & Kalb
Distribution: N - Frl (Tretiach 1997). S - Pugl (Nimis & Tretiach 1999).
Description: Thallus apparently subcrustose, but at higher magnification appearing minutely fruticose-filamentous, of densely branched, 12-35 μm wide, 0.05-0.4(-0.6) mm long, cylindrical, prostrate or ascending pseudoparenchymatous threads with a 1-cell thick cortical layer, the hyphal cells colourless, isodiametrical, usually bearing one or more, c. 1 μm high papillae best visible under SEM; locally the thallus disintegrates into 15-40 μm wide, paler green, soredia-like granules, the superficial cells often papillate. Perithecia 0.2-0.4 mm across, pale brown, ovoid or more or less pyriform, partially surrounded by the thalline filaments. Exciple 30-80 μm thick, colourless or pale yellowish, three-two-layered, the outer layer 10-23 μm thick, most developed apically, of isodiametrical to oblong cells measuring 4-8 x 3-6 μm, the median layer of elongated, thick-walled cells measuring 5-12 x 2-4-5 μm, the inner layer similar but less distinct, with narrower and less thick-walled cells; involucrellum absent; hamathecium of periphyses measuring 20-50 x 1.5-2.5 μm, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel I+ red, K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, fissitunicate, fusiform-cylindrical, thickened at apex when young, with an ocular chamber, K/I-, 80-90 x 9-12 μm. Ascospores 3-4(-5)-septate, hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, (13-)16-21 x (4-)5-6 μm, without a perispore, with numerous oil droplets when fresh. Photobiont chlorococcoid, the cells 4.5-9 μm wide. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a humid subtropical to Mediterranean-Atlantic lichen mainly found on Sambucus nigra in humid-shaded situations, and on leaves of Buxus in the undergrowth of moist-warm forests; certainly not common, but probably also overlooked. It is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Endangered” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c).
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: bark and leaves
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
Most common in areas with a humid-warm climate (e.g. most of Tyrrenian Italy)
