Description: Thallus crustose to subsquamulose, green-grey to yellowish brown in sun-forms, bright green when wet, thick, areolate-lobulate. Areoles subgranular to mostly subsquamulose, contiguous to imbricate, 0.2-0.5 mm wide, with interspersed, darker, blue-grey to brown, more granular squamules containing Nostoc (cephalodia). Upper and lower cortex paraplectenchymatous, 30-40 µm thick. Apothecia lecanorine, sessile, up to 5 mm across, with a brown, concave, smooth disc, and a persistent, 100-200 µm thick, verruculose thalline margin with numerous squamules and thin transparent hairs in the lower part. Epithecium brownish; hymenium colourless, 100-130 µm high, I+ dark blue; paraphyses simple, up to 4.5 µm thick, the apical cells not swollen; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, narrowly ellipsoid or cylindrical, the apex with a K/I+ deep blue central tube in a paler-staining tholus, and an internal, K/I+ dark blue ring-structure. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, thick-walled, (19-)22-34 x 8-12 µm including the warted-ridged epispore, apiculate at one or both ends. Pycnidia rare, pale brown, globose, semi-immersed. Conidia bacilliform, 5-6 µm long. Photobiont chlorococcoid in thallus, cyanobacterial (Nostoc) in cephalodia. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: an arctic-alpine to boreal-montane, circumpolar lichen found on soil, often in and amongst bryophytes over siliceous substrata, in moist habitats near or above treeline; most frequent in the Alps, where it can reach the nival belt, much rarer along the Apennines.
