N. Acta Reg. Soc. Sci. Upsal., ser. 3, 13: 75, 1885. Basionym: Pyrenopsis pictava Nyl. - Flora, 52: 82, 1869.
Synonyms: Collemopsis pictava (Nyl.) Nyl.
Distribution: N - Lig.
Description: Thallus crustose, black, epruinose, thin, poorly delimited, areolate, pseudoparenchymatous throughout, the areoles 0.2-1 mm across (the smallest ones appearing as granules), often convex, with an uneven surface, usually scattered. Apothecia immersed or semi-immersed, 1 per areole, with an initially punctiform, later slightly expanded, urceolate, reddish brown disc surrounded by a thin thalline margin. Proper exciple poorly differentiated; epithecium orange-brown; hymenium colourless; paraphyses branched and anastomosing only slightly constricted at septa; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, with a rather thick, not amyloid wall, without apical amyloid thickenings. Ascospores 1-celled., hyaline, subglobose, 9-11 x 7-9 µm. Photobiont cyanobacterial, chroococcoid, of a few cells surrounded by a gelatinous sheath which is yellowish brown near the thallus surface. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on sunny surfaces of calcareous rocks, mostly in the Mediterranean belt; a very poorly known taxon, which needs further study.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: cyanobacteria, filamentous (e.g. Nostoc, Scytonema)
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
On otherwise dry surfaces with short periods of water seepage after rain
Poorly known taxon in need of further study
