Distribution: S - Pugl, Si (Grillo & Cristaudo 1995).

Description: Thallus crustose, more or less immersed, olive-green to olive-brown, with white, punctiform pseudocyphellae, often delimited by a black prothallus and forming mosaics. Perithecia black, (0.4-)0.6-1(-1.2) mm across, convex to hemispherical, with central, often crateriform ostioles, without a spreading involucrellum. Exciple brown-black throughout, with colourless calcium oxalate crystals; hymenium colourless, without anthraquinone crystals; hamathecium of branched and anastomosed periphysoids, later substituted by more or less unbranched paraphyses; ostiole with periphyses. Asci 8-spored, narrowly cylindrical, long-stalked, bitunicate, with tholus, thickened at apex with an internal apical beak, non-amyloid. Ascospores 3-septate, brown, ellipsoid to subfusiform, (23-)27-33(-38) x (8-)10-14(-15) μm, thick-walled, distoseptate, the lumina angular to subglobose, the wall smooth or faintly striate. Pycnidia  black, immersed, 0.1-0.8 mm across, often aligned along the prothalline line. Conidia narrowly falcate, 10-16 x c. 0.8 µm. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: thallus K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P+ faintly yellow, UV± weakly yellow. Chemistry: an unidentified substance.

Note: a mild-temperate species found on bark of deciduous trees (especially Fraxinus) in humid situations, but never in deep shade, below the montane belt. Rare in Southern Italy.
