Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, medium to dark grey-brown, often with a violet tinge, rimose-areolate to areolate-verrucose, usually delimited by a black prothallus, forming patches to 10 cm in diam. (usually less). Areoles flat and scattered to contiguous and bullate, more or less angular, 0.3-1.5(-2) mm wide, smooth. Cortex composed of a few cells, the uppermost ones with a dark cap; medulla white, I-. Apothecia lecideine, black, 0.4-1(-1.5) mm across, arising between the areoles, round or slightly angular, with a flat to slightly convex disc, and a thin, usually soon excluded proper margin. Proper exciple narrow, brown-black in outer part, reddish brown within, K+ reddish violet; epithecium red-brown, K+ reddish violet; hymenium colourless, 100-120 µm high; paraphysoids coherent, the apical cells capitate; hypothecium brown, K-. Asci 8-spored, clavate, fissitunicate, with a well-developed tholus, lacking an ocular chamber, Rhizocarpon-type. Ascospores 1-septate, dark blue-green to dark brown, 26-36 x 13-16 µm, halonate. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: medulla K- or K+ yellowish, C-, KC-, P- or P+ pale orange. Secondary metabolites: Chemistry: with or without stictic acid.

Note: a holarctic early coloniser of siliceous pebbles and small boulders near the ground, with a wide altitudinal range; common only in the Alps, but to be looked for in all siliceous mountains of Southern Italy. The identification of the samples from Sicily by Brackel (2008c) is not completely certain.
