Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, continuous to rimose, sometimes indistinctly areolate in marginal parts, blastidiate, ochre-brown to violet-grey, forming 1-3(-5) cm wide patches, sometimes delimited by a thin dark prothallus. Blastidia simple or sparingly branched, fragile, 0.02–0.04 mm thick and to 0.08 mm long, often slightly constricted at base. Apothecia very rare, black, lecideine, to 0.8 mm across, with a flat to weakly convex disc and a rather thick proper margin. Proper exciple dark brown in outer part, pale brown within, K+ yellow, with crystals partly dissolving in K; epithecium brown, K+ yellow, with crystals; hymenium colourless or pale yellowish brown, 80-100 μm high; paraphysoids strongly conglutinated, richly branched and anastomosing, sometimes slightly capitate; hypothecium dark brown, K-. Asci 8-spored, clavate, fissitunicate, with a well-developed tholus, lacking an ocular chamber, Rhizocarpon-type. Ascospores muriform, with 4-6 cells in optical view, hyaline, ellipsoid to narrowly ellipsoid, 14-27 x 7-12 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: medulla K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P+ orange. Chemistry : medulla and apothecia with stictic acid.
Note: on metal-rich siliceous rocks, mostly on steeply inclined to rain-sheltered faces in upland areas; easy to overlook, being mostly sterile, and to be looked for further in the Alps.
