Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, rather thin to rather thick, rimose-areolate, pale to dark grey, forming irregular patches, sometimes delimited by a thin black prothallus. Cortex inconspicuous, paraplectenchymatous, the upper part K+ and N+ very weakly violet. Apothecia zeorine, usually crowded, at first partially immersed, then broadly sessile, round to angular by mutual compression, 0.1-0.7(-1.2) mm across, with an initially concave, then flat, orange to dark orange-brown disc, and a persistent, smooth, slightly paler proper margin; thalline margin usually not evident macroscopically, rarely present at the base of apothecia. Proper exciple prosoplectenchymatous, with anthraquinone crystals; epithecium inspersed with orange-yellow crystals of anthraquinones reacting K+ red; hymenium colourless, 75-85(-110) μm high; paraphyses simple to sparingly branched in upper part, the apical cells up to 5 μm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, narrowly ellipsoid, (10-)12-19(-20) x 4-6(-7) μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) (2.5-)3-5 μm. Pycnidia black in upper part. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K- or K+ weakly violet in section, C- or C+ violet, KC-, P-; disc of apothecia K+ red, C-. Chemistry: thallus with the Sedifolia-grey pigment; disc of apothecia with unchlorinated anthraquinones.Note: a cool-temperate to arctic-alpine lichen found on mineral-rich siliceous rocks, sometimes parasitic on other lichens (Aspicilia, Rhizocarpon, brown Xanthoparmelia-species); many Mediterranean records (e.g. from the Iberian Peninsula) are probably wrong. The species has been often considered as a synonym of “Caloplaca” oxfordensis J. Hedrick, a taxon described from North America, but molecular data indicate that the two species are different (Arup & al. 2013).
