Description: Thallus crustose to subleprose, episubstratic, 0.3-1(-2) mm thick, tartareous, continuous to irregularly cracked, very uneven, often forming bullate ridges, sometimes sublobate, ochre-pink tinged lilac when young, grey-lilac to greyish, turning pale brown-grey in the herbarium. Upper surface at first with eroded soralia, finally often densely and more or less continuously sorediate, the soredia 50-100 µm in diam., pinkish brown when young, later ochre-brown or pale brown-grey. Apothecia extremely rare (those described in the following may be the apothecia of a lichenicolous fungus!), round to ovoid or elongate, 0.4-0.8 mm wide, white-pruinose. Exciple brown-black; epithecium reddish brown; hymenium colourless, 50-65 µm high, I+ red, K/I+ pale blue; hypothecium colourless or almost so. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate. Ascospores 3-5-septate, hyaline, ovoid, 14-20 x 5-7 µm. Pycnidia inconspicuous, immersed and hardly visible as small black dots. Conidia thread-like, usually curved, 15-27 x c. 1 µm. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: K+ faintly yellow or K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-, UV-. Chemistry: lecanoric acid.
Note: on vertical to rain-sheltered surfaces of compact, basic siliceous rocks, much more rarely on weakly calcareous rocks or, exceptionally, on rain-protected bases of ancient trees. The species is known from Southern Europe and Turkey.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by soredia, or soredia-like structures (e.g. blastidia)
Most common in areas with a humid-warm climate (e.g. most of Tyrrenian Italy)
In underhangs rarely wetted by rain
