Staurothele guestphalica (Körb.) Arnold

Synonyms: Porphyriospora guestphalica (Körb.) Servít; Staurothele dalmatica Servít; Staurothele orbicularis auct. p.p. non (A. Massal.) Th. Fr.
Distribution: N - VG (TSB 3278), Lig (Giordani & al. 2016).
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic, pale grey, adjacent thalli often separated by dark lines. Perithecia black, 0.25-0.4 mm across, immersed in pits in the rock, without involucrellum. Exciple brown-black throughout; hymenial gel I+ blue, K/I+ blue; hymenial algae 3-6 x 3-5 μm, isodiametrical to shortly oblong, 1-1.5 times as long as wide; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent. Asci 1(-2)-spored, clavate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, after dehiscence with a delicate extruded endotunica, I-, K/I-. Ascospores muriform, long remaining colourless, finally pale brown or pale pinkish brown, ellipsoid to narrowly ellipsoid, often narrowing at one end, (45-)55-88 x 15-28 μm (somewhat smaller when 2 per ascus). Pycnidia black, immersed in the thallus. Conidia hyaline, rod-shaped. Photobiont chlorococcoid (Stichococcus), present in both thallus and hymenium. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on calcareous boulders near the ground, and on large pebbles in dry grasslands; related to S. orbicularis, and in need of further study.
