Distribution: C - Tosc (TSB 35306), Sar (Etayo & Mayrhofer 2003). S - Si (TSB 31103).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, rimose to rimose-areolate, sometimes almost subsquamulose because of the raised edges of the areoles, greenish grey. Perithecia brown to brown-black, solitary or in groups, immersed in thalline warts to half-projecting, 0.2-0.5 mm across, with a central ostiole. Exciple c. 10 μm thick, greenish or brownish in upper part, colourless at base, covered with an irregular, colourless, 10-60 μm thick epinecral layer composed of small crystals and bark remnants; paraphysoids thread-like, persistent, branched and anastomosing; periphyses absent; hymenial gel I-, K/I-. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, fissitunicate, with two functional wall-layers, the inner wall thin and the outer thick, with an ocular chamber, 80-100 x 12-13 μm, I-. Ascospores muriform, with 2-4 longitudinal septa, at first hyaline, but soon turning grey to brown, ellipsoid to ovoid, 18-22(-27) x 9-12 μm, the outer wall scarcely thicker than the septa. Photobiont chlorococcoid, the algal cells without a gelatinous sheath. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on the (mostly) smooth bark of shrubs (e.g. Pistacia) in Mediterranean maquis vegetation. It is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Endangered” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c). See also note on Th. modesta.
